Chiefs 5 Eagles 3

The Chilliwack Chiefs made it two straight wins with a 5-3 victory in Surrey Saturday night.

One week after a 13-5 victory over the Trail Smoke Eaters ended a franchise record 11 game losing streak the Chiefs improved their season record to 9-26-1-2. The Chiefs are now 12 points back of the Eagles in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Mainland Division.

Nicolas Pierog’s 24th goal of the season was the only goal of the first period as the Eagles led 1-0 after twenty minutes.

The Chiefs were dominant in the middle frame outscoring the Eagles 3-0 to take a 3-1 lead after two periods. Jaret Babych scored his sixth of the season at the 2:13 mark to tie the game at one. At 3:59 Kurt Black’s ninth of the season gave the Chiefs a lead they would not relinquish. With just under two minutes left in the period Blake Gober beat Eagles starter Devon Fordyce for his seventh of the season and a 3-1 Chief lead after two.

Austin Plevy’s centering pass on an early third period power play bounced off a Surrey defender and behind Fordyce to give the Chiefs a 4-1 lead. Braedan Russell got the Eagles within two at 9:04 before Tanner Cochrane’s first goal since rejoining the Chiefs at 16:12 restored the Chiefs three goal lead. Mitchell Fyffe’s goal 28 seconds later rounded out the scoring.

Spencer Tremblay made 28 saves to earn the win. Fordyce turned away 21 shots in a losing effort.

Chilliwack was 1/3 on the power play and 3/3 on the penalty kill.

The two teams meet again Sunday evening in Chilliwack. Game time is 5pm.

All tickets for the game are just $5 with a donation of a non perishable food item for the Chilliwack Salvation Army Food Bank.
