Trevor Hills scored on a penalty shot in the second overtime to give the Chiefs a 4-3 win over the visiting Prince George Spruce Kings Friday night at Prospera Centre.
It was the second overtime win for the Chiefs this season and both times it has been Hills with the winning goal.
With the win, the Chiefs improve to 7-6-0-1 on the season.
After killing off two early first period penalties, the Spruce Kings opened the scoring on their first man advantage of the night. Paul De Jersey, the league’s leading goal scorer needed just six seconds of power play time to give the Kings a 1-0 lead with his 15th goal of the season at 8:52 of the first period. Tyson Witala and Chase Golightly assisted on the goal.
The first period ended with the Chiefs 0/4 on the power play, trailing 1-0 and leading in shots 11-5.
Chilliwack notched the equalizer on a two man advantage 6:30 into the second period. David Bondra fed Derek Huisman with a perfect pass from behind the net and Huisman made no mistake beating Kirk Thompson for his ninth goal of the season.
The Chiefs took a 2-1 lead just 37 seconds later when 16 year old forward Garrett Forster wired home his second of the season from 30 feet out. Jeremy Gossard and Jaret Babych earned the helpers.
The Spruce Kings thought they had the game tied at two with just under two minutes left in the period but the ref ruled the puck was kicked in.
Prince George then got one that counted when Witala knocked in a rebound on a power play with 68 seconds left in the period.
The Kings had a great chance with four seconds left in the period when Michael Colantone was sent in all alone. Chiefs goaltender Bryton Udy came up big making a right pad save to keep the game tied at two after forty minutes.
David Bondra put the Chiefs back up by a goal on the power play with 9:01 left in the third period when he one timed a pass from Malcolm Gould over the left shoulder of Thompson that came back out of the net as quickly as it went in. After a lengthy discussion between the officials and the goal judge it was ruled a goal. Mike Berry also assisted.
De Jersey struck again with 2:09 left in the period when he beat Udy with a backhander from 15 feet out.
In the first five minute overtime, played four on four, De Jersey had the best chance to end it with just over one minute to go but his shot hit the post behind Udy.
De Jersey was front and center again in the second overtime which was played three on three. BCHL rules state that any minor penalty in the second overtime period (not offsetting) is an automatic penalty shot. It was De Jersey’s penalty for a blow to the head that set the table for Hills second overtime winner of the season.
Next action for the Chiefs is Saturday night in Vernon. Next home game for Chilliwack is Friday November 11th when the Langley Rivermen make their only visit of the season to Prospera Centre. Game time is 7pm.
