The Chiefs will be looking for their third straight win when they host the Coastal Conference leading Powell River Kings Saturday night. Game time is 7pm.

The Chiefs (4-1-0-0) are coming off their second straight win, a 4-1 decision over the Vernon Vipers last night on home ice. It was the Vipers (7-1-0-0) first loss of the season.

The Kings (6-3-1-0) are playing their third game in three nights tonight. After dropping a 4-1 decision in Merritt Thursday night, the Kings skated to a 4-4 tie in Coquitlam last night.

Playoff Meetings: Chilliwack and Powell River have met three times in the playoffs with the Chiefs winning all three series. The Chiefs won their first BCHL championship in 1995 when they defeated the (Paper) Kings in five games in the league finals. In 2003 the Chiefs knocked out the Kings three straight in the second round. The two teams met again in a first round series in 2006 with the Chiefs winning in four games.

 

All time head to head: Chilliwack and Powell River have faced each other 57 times during the regular season. The Chiefs have won 30 of those games, lost 22 in regulation, 1 in a shootout and 4 in overtime. One of the Chiefs win came in a shootout and two were in overtime. Chiefs hit the road: After tonight’s game the Chiefs hit the road for straight games. The Chiefs are in Merritt tomorrow afternoon for a 2pm game before visiting Alberni Valley, Victoria and Nanaimo next weekend. Chilliwack returns to home ice on October 28th when they host the Trail Smoke Eaters.

Chiefs Roster Notes:The Chiefs are currently carrying 22 players on their roster including two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 14 forwards. By age, Chilliwack has one 16 year olds (Forster), one 17 year old (Babych), six 18 year olds  (Gossard, Graboski, Tibbet, Laurent, Berry, Udy) 10 19 year olds (Huisman, Bondra, Gould, Hansen, Hills, Gonzales, Thompson, Elliott, Fontaine, Gillam), and four 20 year olds (Blessing, Spring, Sitterley, Miller).

American Flavor: The Chiefs currently have six players from the United States on their roster, including one player from each of the following States: California, Maryland, Delaware, New York, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Canucks:The Chiefs have 16 Canadian players on their roster including representatives from BC (11), Alberta (3), Quebec (1) and Ontario (1).

 

Quick Starts: Chiefs forward Kit Sitterley is tied for the team lead in points with seven (3g 2a) through five games. Last season in 42 games he finished with 16 points (11g 5a) in 42 games with the Langley Chiefs…Chiefs forward David Bondra also has seven points this season (1g 6a). Last season with the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League he finished with nine points (4g 5a) in 58 games.

 

NHL Bloodlines: Chiefs forwards Jaret Babych and David Bondra are both sons of former National Hockey Leaguers. Jaret’s father Dave played 1,195 NHL games for Winnipeg, Hartford, Vancouver, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. He finished his career with 142 goals and 581 assists. David’s father Peter spent 15 seasons in the NHL with Washington, Ottawa,  Atlanta and Chicago. He finished his career with 892 points including 503 goals.

 

Did you know: Chiefs goaltender Mitch Gillam leads the BCHL in save percentage at 93.5…The Chiefs are a perfect 3-0-0-0 on home ice this season…Chiefs Assistant Coach Doug Ast is the Chiefs all time leading scorer. Ast spent three years with the Chiefs beginning in 1991. In 161 games Ast scored 101 goals and added 141 assists…Chiefs Assistant Coach Brandon Fleenor is also a former Chiefs player. Fleenor appeared in 110 games with the Chiefs, scoring 20 goals and 37 assists and racked up 302 minutes in penalties…Chiefs Head Coach Harvey Smyl is in his 19th season behind the Chiefs bench. Smyl spent 13 seasons in Chilliwack beginning in 1993 before moving with the team to Langley for five seasons in 2006
