Chiefs win fourth straight

The Chiefs upped their winning streak to four with a 4-1 win over the visiting Alberni Valley Bulldogs Sunday night.

The win improved the Chiefs record to 9-3-1-0. The loss was the sixth straight for the Bulldogs who fell to 4-9-1-0.

For the first time in seven games the Chiefs scored the game’s first goal and it came shorthanded off the stick of Will Calverley.

Cole Poliziani started the play in the offensive zone springing the puck loose for Calverley who fired  a low wrist shot past Bulldogs goaltender Brody Claeys from 20 feet out. The goal, scored at 11:14 of the opening period was the first of the season for the native of Scarborough Ontario.

Less than a minute later, with the Chiefs still on the power play, Anthony Vincent was hauled down on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. He fired high and wide on the attempt dropping the Chiefs to 0/3 on penalty shots this season.

Shots after twenty minutes favored the Chiefs 11-7.

The teams exchanged goals in the second period with both goal coming while Chiefs defenseman Austin Chorney was serving a minor penalty for roughing.

Linden Hora doubled the Chiefs lead at the 5:01 mark, beating Claeys on a breakaway. The goal was Hora’s fourth of the season.

The Bulldogs got on the board 73 seconds later. Ryan Steele took advantage of some flat feet in the Chiefs zone before beating goaltender Mark Sinclair with a backhand to forehand deke.

The Chiefs spent the majority of the final five minutes of the second period on the power play but were unable to increase their lead.

Goals 25 seconds apart in the third period by Tommy Lee and Aaron O’Neill rounded out the scoring.

Sinclair finished with 24 saves to earn his eight victory of the season.

Chilliwack was 0/6 on the power play and 3/4 on the penalty kill.

The Chiefs now travel to Vernon and Prince George for games Wednesday and Thursday before returning home to host the Wenatchee Wild on Saturday.
