Chiefs Fall To Bandits in WCC Opener

PENTICTON, B.C. – The Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) Champion Brooks Bandits opened the 2017 Western Canada Cup with a 5-2 victory over the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) representative Chilliwack Chiefs on Saturday afternoon at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Parker Foo tallied a goal and two assists to pace the Bandits scoring while Arnaud Vachon had a multi-point game (one goal and one assist) in the Bandits victory in the opening game of the 2017 WCC. Brooks surrendered the opening goal, however, as Chilliwack’s Anthony Vincent opened the scoring at the 8:24 mark of the 1st period, standing as the lone goal in the game’s opening period of play.

The Bandits struck for three goals in the middle stanza with Cale Makar scoring at the 4:38 mark of the period before Brooks took their first lead of the game courtesy of a Arnaud Vachon goal at the 6:16 mark of the frame. Brooks tallied their third goal of the period with just nine seconds left on the clock on a power play with Josh McKechney doing the honours.

Brooks continued to pour on the offense with two goals in the span of 21 seconds as Bandit captain Nick Prkusic pushed the lead to 4-1 at the 4:03 mark while Parker Foo tallied the fifth Bandit goal at the 4:24 mark of the final period. Chilliwack closed the book on scoring at the 14:55 mark of the 3rd period with Connor McCarthy scoring on the power play.

Mitchell Benson started in goal for the Bandits making 22 saves on 24 shots while Mark Sinclair got the nod in goal for the Chiefs, turning aside 29 of 33 shots while Mathieu Caron relieved him in net after the Bandits fourth goal and stopped one of the two shots he faced.

Brooks Western Canada Cup continues on Sunday, April 30 when they face off against the BCHL Champions and host Penticton Vees at 7 p.m. PST while Chilliwack has an off day on Sunday and get back in action on Monday, May 1 as they take on the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) Champion Portage Terriers at 7 p.m. PST.
